Bags are cleaned inside and out to remove scuff stains, ink, make-up etc. and repairs range from fixing a strap to sewing in new linings.

Are you looking for a good dry cleaner?  Most people I talk to tell me that they have tried many dry cleaners looking for a “good” one.  What makes a “good” dry cleaner anyway?  I literally grew up in the dry cleaning business and I’ve now been in the industry for just over 35 years.

Along the way I’ve opened many stores of my own, franchised over 50 stores in 5 states and written articles in all the major dry cleaning periodicals.

With each new store owner that I trained I tried to instill the most important aspects of the dry cleaning business including customer service and of course, quality.  When looking for a good dry cleaner do not make the mistake of just comparing prices.  There are cleaners that have devoted their entire life to perfecting their craft and their are others that have no experience and very little training.  Don’t let them practice on your clothes.

There are several things to look for when evaluating  a new dry cleaner.  Here’s a good checklist to help you decide.

1. Experience & Training – If they have been properly and professionally trained, then years of experience is not as important but without training I think 5 or more years is a minimum of what it takes to really know what your doing.
2. On-Site Cleaning – There are many “drop off”  type dry cleaners that send their work out to nearby wholesalers.  While this doesn’t automatically make them bad, it’s best to use a dry cleaner who processes on-site and who is on-site himself.
3. Environmentally Friendly – Keep your clothes and yourself safe by choosing an environmentally friendly dry cleaner.  Most dry cleaners still use a chemical nicknamed “Perc” which has just been upgraded by the EPA to a “Likely” carcinogen from a “possible” carcinogen.  Ask your cleaner what process he uses.  Also, does he recycle hangers and plastic?
4. Remove Tags – Do they remove those pesky dry cleaning tags so that your garment is ready to wear?  A sign of a good, caring dry cleaner.
5. Packaging – Do they use quality packaging materials such as sweater bags, plastic clip hangers for skirts and stuff sleeves when needed.
6. De-pilling – One of the most important procedures is often overlooked because it is so labor intensive.  Every sweater and coat needs to be professionally de-linted and de-pilled prior to packaging.
7. Hours – Are they open when it’s convenient for you?  My recommendation is that a dry cleaner should be open every day, including Sundays.  We are a convenience service and we need to open when you need us.
8. Tailoring – Look for a dry cleaner that provides on-site tailoring.  Many items need to be fixed as a normal course of processing.  Small repairs such as sewing on buttons, fixing a falling hem or a small hole in a sweater should be free.
9. Shirt buttons – All shirts should come back without broken or missing buttons.  This is the #1 complaint of customers nationwide.
10. Free Pick-up & Delivery – Try to find a cleaner that will offer free pick up and delivery for those times that you can’t make it.
